What is Reiki?

Updated: Jul 25

Simply put, Reiki is directing universal and Earthly energy through the Hara line, chakras, and body in order to bring balance and healing to the spirit, therefore to the body and mind. The practitioner serves merely as a channel and guide to this healing energy.

Reiki, pronounced ray-key, is a form of holistic and natural healing (my Teacher calls it alternative medicine) that channels universal/life force energy into the body to encourage healing. As attuned Reiki practitioners, we are channels/conduits- we don’t give anything of ourselves other than kindness, knowledge, love, and a safe place for healing. It can be described as like a lamp or any other electrical device: the receiver is the device, the healer is the electrical wire, and Reiki is the electricity.

The term “Reiki” is made up of two Japanese words squished together, meaning universal life force energy when combined. “Rei” means soul, deity, or divine spirit (it can also mean order or law). “Ki” means life force or energy, which is referred to as “chi” in China and “prana” in India.

Based on an ancient form of healing rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui, Reiki is a gift and a skill strengthened by attunement that brings source energy through the chakra system. This balances the body and brings it into harmony with the universe/collective consciousness. Reiki uses hand positions, mantras, and symbols to transfer healing energy in an intentional manner, which can be given anytime, anywhere. It is not limited by time or space, and so can heal our past, future, and over distances. Reiki heals all aspects of the body, using the body’s natural ability to heal and come into balance. It simply provides the energy.

Anyone can learn Reiki, as Reiki is in everyone and everything. You do not have to meditate, see auras, be of a spiritual state, possess certain religious beliefs, or have a particular gift to use Reiki. The only requirement is the desire and willingness to channel the energy to bring healing, create a safe space for others to heal, and hold pure intent for the highest good.

During a Reiki treatment, those receiving it can go into a state of deep relaxation and peace. Some may experience heat, tingling sensations, seeing colors, having visions, or nothing at all (this is because sometimes it takes time for Reiki to settle into the body, and they experience effects later). It is important to remember that Reiki can do no harm, as it comes from a place of divine love in the form of energy. There is no wrong way to do Reiki- it’s an intuitive art and the methods taught by Masters are guidelines. The Reiki energy knows what to do and goes where it is needed. If you are lacking in confidence about your ability, know that you can do no wrong and simply trust the divine energy and hold onto your intent to bring healing and love. There is no wrong or right way to perform or receive a session. Reiki energy can cause beneficial effects such as:

● Deep relaxation

● Improved sleep

● Relief of physical stiffness and tension

● Accelerated natural healing

● Energizing when someone is physically and/or mentally drained

● Reduced stress

● Reduced physical, emotional, and energetic impacts of stress

● Detoxification of the body

● Dissolves physical, emotional, and spiritual blockages

● Helps to release emotional wounds

● Helps change negative conditioning and behavior

● Improves concentration and mental clarity

● Brings mind, body, and spirit into balance

● Focuses the mind

The true power to bring healing lies in the recipient of the treatment, as it is their system that takes the energy and uses it to heal. An open heart and open mind results in a more beneficial session. Reiki can never cause harm. It is absolutely impossible. It will always bring some level of benefit, as well as healing and balance. Each recipient may react differently to Reiki, as it knocks negativity loose and sweeps it away in the flow of energy in order to replace it with love and light. Some recipients have been known to cry, sleep, laugh, completely relax, et cetera as old emotions are brought to the surface for cleansing.

It is recommended to receive regular Reiki sessions, especially for those who do not ward themselves from any energy that could cause lower vibrations, darkening of the aura, and clouding (even blocking!) of chakras, but this is not a requirement. It is best to follow one’s intuition on when another session is needed, but many practitioners recommend once a month or so if you regularly receive Reiki. If one's case is severe enough, however, weekly may be recommended at first until the system is stabilized.

Practitioners can also recommend exercises to do in order to continue your healing outside of sessions!

Reiki does ease pain and illness, but it does not replace professional medical care. Please see a doctor for insistent pain. Your health matters! Reiki is known for miracles, but it is important to know when it is time to see a doctor rather than a practitioner.
